Every year, just before school lets out for summer, my friends and I celebrate in a way that might seem a little unconventional.

We get on the river.

While our children are still sitting in classrooms and blissfully unaware that summer vacation is only days away, we head to the Cranford Canoe Club, rent tandem kayaks, and spend a few hours playing like children ourselves.

It's become an annual tradition.

Visitors traveled from nearby cities to enjoy boating, fishing, skating, and leisurely afternoons along the water. The river was once the center of community life, even hosting annual River Carnivals with illuminated canoe floats.

More than a century later, the river still offers the same opportunity: a chance to slow down and reconnect with nature.

That's one reason I think kayaking the Rahway River is one of the best day trips in New Jersey. You don't need to drive for hours. You don't need expensive equipment. You simply show up, rent a kayak (or canoe), and spend a few hours immersed in a side of New Jersey that many people never see.

As you paddle through Cranford, you'll pass towering trees, historic homes, and quiet stretches of water that feel surprisingly removed from everyday suburban life. Keep your eyes open and you may even spot some local wildlife along the riverbeds.

Most importantly, you'll leave feeling lighter than when you arrived.

For me, this annual tradition isn't really about kayaking. It's about friendship. It's about taking a pause before summer's beautiful chaos begins. And it's about remembering that adventure doesn't always require a plane ticket or a long road trip.

Sometimes it's waiting right in your own backyard.
