Best Day Trips in New Jersey: A Visit to Luna Parc

Updated: Jun 17

I normally photograph and write about the wildlife that's right outside our door, along with some of the best places to experience nature. So I hesitated when I sat down to write this post because it doesn't include wildlife at all.

What it does include is something equally inspiring: creativity, imagination, and art on a scale I've never seen before.

If you're searching for one of the best day trips in New Jersey, consider a visit to Luna Parc in Sandyston. Tucked away in the hills of Sussex County, this extraordinary property is part home, part art installation, and entirely unforgettable.

Yesterday, two friends and I made the drive to visit Luna Parc, the lifelong creation of artist Ricky Boscarino. Over the course of 37 years, Boscarino transformed his home and surrounding property into a living work of art—and he still lives there today.

I've traveled to many places over the years, but I've never seen anything quite like it.

Colorful art-filled room in Luna Parc with arched stained-glass windows looking onto a whimsical sculpture garden; masks, chairs, and lamps inside.
Eclectic artist's home in Luna Parc with hanging crystal beads, woven textiles, sculptures, and a teal House Fire sign amid colorful handmade decor.
Four colorful stained-glass panels in Luna Parc, which show abstract figures, flowers, honeycomb, and a skeleton against bright patterned backgrounds.
Eclectic art-filled room with bottle-cap ceiling, orange chairs, zebra rug, shelves of curios, and hand-painted signs with dates.

Every corner of the property reveals a new surprise. You'll find colorful mosaics, stained-glass windows, whimsical sculptures made from recycled materials, intricate tile work, and collections of fascinating objects gathered from around the world. The house itself feels like stepping into a dream where every surface tells a story.

This fantastical fountain was created during the summer of 2024. Ricky of Luna Parc created the metal sculpture complete with bike wheels and tuna cans. The result is a true highlight of the Luna Parc experience. Water fills a scoop, which strikes a symbol every minute and 5 seconds.

What makes Luna Parc even more remarkable is that it wasn't created overnight. The property came to life through Boscarino's vision, decades of hard work, and the contributions of neighbors, artists, and students who helped bring his ideas to reality.

I had to include a wildlife image! This outdoor sculpture is just a tiny of example of the creativity that beams from this property.

For anyone looking for unique NJ day trips, hidden gems in New Jersey, or inspiring places to visit beyond the usual tourist attractions, Luna Parc is well worth the drive.

Tours are offered only a few times each month and must be reserved in advance. To learn more or book a tour, visit Luna Parc's website.
