Photograph by Christine Dyer.

This brilliant Prothonotary Warbler appears to pause in contemplation before a wall of peeling paint and rust—a wonderfully unexpected scene captured by Christine Dyer during the 2020 pandemic at South Mountain Reservation, along the Rahway River.

The weathered surface, layered with greens, blues, and warm tones, resembles an abstract painting, creating the delightful impression that this tiny golden bird has stopped to admire the artwork. The contrast between the warbler’s vivid plumage and the richly textured backdrop makes the image both playful and striking—a reminder that some of nature’s most beautiful moments appear in the most unexpected places.
