Photographed at Nomahegan Park in Cranford, New Jersey, the egret stands tall and alert in the shallows, its slender form mirrored in the still water below. At first glance, the water appears almost black, but look closer and you'll find layers of rich, deep greens woven through the shadows. The luminous white of the egret against those dark, unexpected tones creates a dramatic contrast that gives the photograph its distinctive character. The reflection adds a sculptural, almost abstract quality, and this photograph was also chosen as the cover image for There’s This River, Christine Dyer’s book celebrating the wildlife and natural beauty found along the Rahway River.
